Loudness is the quality of a sound that is primarily a psychological correlate of physical strength or amplitude. You can try to measure the sound pressure in decibels.

Loudness level LN is measured in in phons.

Loudness N is measured in in sones.

Sound pressure level is measured in dBSPL, where the reference level of 0 dBSPL is the threshold of hearing.

The ear drums and the microphones are only sensitve to the sound pressure. We measure the sound pressure with a sound level meter.

Loudness is affected by sound pressure, frequency and its bandwidth, and duration (time).

Usually sound is measured in Decibels.

Loudness or sound is measured in a unit called decibels.

  • Near total silence - 0 dB
  • A whisper - 15 dB
  • Normal conversation - 60 dB
  • A lawnmower - 90 dB
  • A car horn - 110 dB
  • A rock concert or a jet engine - 120 dB
  • A gunshot or firecracker - 140 dB

*dB= decibel

that would be decibels. a decibel is actually approximately the softest sound a human can hear. a bel would actually be the base unit.

A unit of measure of the loudness of sound?

pretty sure your looking for the decibel (db)

In what units is the loudness os sounds measured?

The unit of relative loudness is the sone. The unit for absolute loudness, or loudness level, is the phon. Both relative and absolute loudness are perceptual measures that vary from person to person. The unit used to measure sound pressure is the dB (decibel). Since dB measures the power of a sound wave, a physical characteristic, it is not a perceptual measure but a scientific one (thus perception of the sound has no effect on it).Read more: What_is_the_unit_of_relative_loudness
