It is sometimes possible to arrive at a reasonable conclusion based on the information that is available, and be wrong. Without sufficient information it is sometimes impossible to arrive at the truth.
A Prediction is making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence. Example: I'm trying to judge when my friends might arrive at my house from a major airport. A. Common Knowledge: Traffic around a large city increases during rush hour. B. Personal knowledge: The last time I drove to x city, it took me an hour longer than I thought because of heavy traffic during rush hour. C: Common knowledge: Getting luggage at a big airport can add 30-45 minutes to a person's plans. D: Personal knowledge: The last time I used the airport, it took nearly an hour to get my luggage. E: Common knowledge: Traffic around a large airport can get congested, especially around flight times. F: Personal knowledge: With no traffic, it takes 1 hour to drive to my house from the airport. Prediction: If my friends' flight arrives at 4:30 pm, I might expect them to arrive at my house 2 to 3 hours after their flight arrived. That is my prediction. I'll have dinner ready by 7:15, but also have an appetizer and beverages ready for them if they arrive before 7:15 pm.

Sherlock Holmes employed deductive reasoning not only in the cases he was working on but in his everyday life. He would gather all the facts and blend his knowledge of science, medicine, literature and psychology to arrive at a conclusion. If it was not the right conclusion he would use this to grow closer to the most obvious outcome (process of elimination).
The ability to see beyond the evidence at hand and arrive at a reasonable conclusion.
It is sometimes possible to arrive at a reasonable conclusion based on the information that is available, and be wrong. Without sufficient information it is sometimes impossible to arrive at the truth.
Descartes suggested the method of universal doubt as a way to arrive at certain knowledge. He proposed doubting everything that could be doubted in order to find a foundation of truth that is indubitable. This led him to his famous conclusion: "I think, therefore I am."
