I got this: "Unlike most fossil deposits, which consist of scattered bones accumulated over extended periods of time, the ash bed contains mostly articulated remains with bones still joined together in the proper order." From here: http://www-museum.unl.edu/research/vertpaleo/ashfall.html

The Ashfall Fossil Beds are located in Nebraska. When the Yellowstone super volcano erupted between 10 and 12 million years ago, an enormous blanket of ash buried many animals, which were preserved as fossils to the present day. It was discovered when the skull of a rhino was seen sticking out of a gully wall in 1971. I couldn't find the name of the discoverer.

Why are there so many fossils in the ashfall bed?

The ashfall beds were caused when a volcano erupted and covered the landscape with ashes. This caused a massive number of animals to die because they inhaled the ash and it coated their respiratory system and suffocated them. Then, the ashes covered their bodies and protected them from being scattered and decomposing over the millions of years.

Is ashfall a compound word?

What do fossils feel like?

Fossils have layer upon layer of hardened tissue. Therefore they are quite rough in texture where the insides are more malleable. Depending on what the fossil is of some fossils give off a sour aroma. Most of the time animal fossils deteriate at a faster rate than fossils of humans or shells. Fossils are a unique study and I you study them further.
