The breathable atmosphere only extends to about 7 or 8 kilometers (22,000 to 26,000 feet), and by the top of the stratosphere (50 km) is a near vacuum. The edge of space is commonly defined as 100 km (62 miles or 328,000 feet).

The lowest stable satellite orbits are at 160 km (100 miles) above the Earth, but there are still occasional air molecules out as far as 600 km (373 miles).
