In a solid. There are a WHOLE lot of particles. They are all tightly connected and the only way to separate them is by using a lot of force. In a liquid, the particles are connected but can move around freely. They still have to connect to the other particles, but the bond is weaker and very easily broken. In a gas, the particles are NOT connected and can move around freely. They do not have to be connected, unlike solids and liquids; and they can move, unlike solids.

Gases change shape according to their container. Liquids do this too, but only gases fill up ALL the space in the container. Solid doesn't change at all.

Also, gases can change volume by being compressed or otherwise, solids can't. Liquids can be compressed too, but no where NEAR as much as gases can.

Gases can be spread apart or be squezed together as they fill a container. In gases the atoms and molecules are free to move independently, colliding frequently. The distance between particles in a gas is much larger than the distance between particles in a solid or a liquid.

The molecules are packed less densely so liquids and gases can move more freely than solids. Solids have a definite mass and shape, whereas liquids dont have a definite shape, and gasses have neither.
