moving from general conclusions to specific observations
The inductive method goes from practice to theory. It starts with a hypothesis and creates a theory. It is pragmatic in that it starts with practice and builds as it goes. In inductive research the researcher will make an observation and come up with a theory based on that observation. They will then test their own theory by including all that they learn through the research. This is called qualitative research. It has infinitive regress and does not have as high of a level of certainty as quantitative research. The hypo-deductive method, or quantitative research starts with a theory and tests it. The hypothesis is at the end of the research whereas in qualitative the hypothesis is at the beginning. Quantitative goes from theory to practice. The researcher must start with a theory if they want to do quantitative research. Quantitative research is theory testing. There is a debate in the field that quantitative research is more scientific then quantitative research. They are both so different in that in qualitative the researcher literally starts with an observation and in quantitative you are starting with the theory and then trying to observe it.
Deductive reasoning is coming to a logical conclusion from one or more general statements. It combines premises with conclusions. It differs from inductive reasoning because a conclusion is reached by applying general rules that hold over a closed domain of discourse that narrows the range under consideration until only a conclusion is left.
usually inductive, since you're trying to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
