Any unit of length can be used to describe the results of any measurement of length,

but some of them result in inconvenient numbers ... numbers that are difficult to write,

remember or report to others.

Here are some units that would produce convenient numbers

when used to describe the length of a classroom:

-- inch

-- foot

-- yard

-- centimeter

-- meter

Units that would produce inconvenient numbers include:

-- mile

-- furlong

-- Angstrom

-- millimeter

-- nanometer

-- kilometer

-- parsec

I would probably use a "tape measure", like what carpenters use. One could use a yardstick (or similarly, a meterstick), but a yardstick is a fixed length of 3 feet, sometimes with a little extra at the ends, so it could be awkward to measure the classroom if it's length was not an exact multiple of 3 feet.

A carpenter's "tape measure" has a flexible metal strip that can be extended out to the full length...they come very short (6') and quite long...I have found a 25' tape measure to be quite useful.

OR...you could buy a 'laser' tape measure, that bounces a beam of light off the far wall and computes what the distance is....but a tape measure would work just fine!
