Rachel Carson wrote a book called Silent Spring talking about the effect pesticides and insecticides could have on the delicate balance of nature. And she was right; once these chemicals enter an aquatic ecosystem, or air, it could, and will, make its way to the lives of living organisms. Remember, everything on this earth is interrelated, down to the smallest phytoplankton in the ocean. Fish could dissolve these pesticides in their fatty tissues (in a process called biological magnification, but that's for another time!) and we humans could eat them! With the same chemicals inside the fish! That's how important Rachel Carson's discovery was. You wouldn't want to find out that DDT was in the fish you ate last night, and you were going to be sick for the rest of the week, would you? ;)
