Latin was the international language.
Scientists in Germany, who could not speak French , Would publish their work in Latin, because it was understood by all.
Even today science uses Latin and Classical Greek. e.g trigonmetry ' measuring triangles (Latin) . Helium (From Classical Greece for Sun).
So when you come accross big words and you think ,Where did that come from?' Go back to the Classical Languages.
