The name acropolis in Greek, taken literally, meant 'upper city' and was a settlement that was built on an elevated area of ground, often on a hill with steep sides. An acropolis was especially popular when building citadels as the main purpose of building an acropolis was to provide far greater levels of defense and protection from enemies.
