This is a rather broad question, and to sufficiently answer it would take much more space than available here. In short, numerous metazoans have fossil records that date to the Carboniferous (or, in the US, the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian) Period, or even earlier.

The Carboniferous Period is probably best known for it's extensive coal forests that dominated the North American landscape. North America was located near the equator during this time, and hence the climate much warmer and more humid. Giant swamps were built by unusual trees called lycopods, and ferns were also dominant. These forests were also home to giant insects, amphibians, and early reptiles.

In the oceans, the animal communities largely maintained the kind of status quo that existed for tens of millions of years during the Paleozoic Era. Brachiopods and crinoids were dominant, but bivalves, trilobites, bryozoans, gastropods, cephalopods, sponges, annelids (worms), echinoderms, and coral were also present. There were coral reefs, but composed of the now extinct rugose and tabulate corals. Bony fishes and sharks were swimming around, as well.
