What would happen if microorganisms had not been discovered?

What was the world like before Pasteur? Our understandings of the disease process is closely tied with the discovery of microorganisms. So one guess would be that more of us would be dying of disease in the absence of knowledge of microorganisms.

Oddly enough, cells never were invented. They were created by God, developed as a cosmic surprise, or some combination of both.

In short, if cells did not exist, life would not exist.

If the monks had never invented the small rooms in which they lived in their monasteries they would never have given such a room the name "cell". The effect of that would be that A. Van Leeuwenhoek would not have been inspired to describe the microscopic view of cork using that same name because of the similarity of the structures...we would probably be calling plant and animal cells something else.
