If there was no vegetation, there would possibly be no surface life forms of any kind on the planet. (Some bacteria have been found living in rock that is miles below the surface.) But the diet of humans consists of many types of vegetation, as well as meat and fish. The animals that we use for human consumption eat vegetation, as well. Even the animals that don't eat vegetation (insect eating birds, lions, etc.) would perish since their prey depends on vegetation for food. Also, with no trees to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, there would be a serious oxygen shortage, which is also necessary to sustain plant, animal and human life.
