You must read from the bottom of the meniscus. In a narrow, graduated glass cylinder, water has a slightly domed surface, with the centre being higher than the side, so giving a false reading if the centre height is taken.

What is a graduated cylinder used for in science?

A graduated cylinder is a piece of laboratory glassware used to accurately measure out volumes of chemicals for use in reactions. They are generally more accurate and precise for this purpose than beakers or erlenmeyer flasks, although not as precise as a volumetric flask or volumetric pipet. They come in a variety of sizes for different volumes, typically 10 mL, 25 mL, 50 mL, or 100 mL and up to as large as 1 or 2 liters.Determine the volume contained in a graduated cylinder by reading the bottom of the meniscus at eye level. In other words, holding the graduated cylinder at eye level, the bottom of the curved surface of the liquid (called the meniscus) is where you read off the mark on the graduated cylinder to determine the volume properly.

What is the bottom of the curve of liquid in a graduated cylinder?

Since the surface of water rises up to the sides of the cylinder, the low point is in the center of the surface. (Volume is assumed unless boiling or melting points are stated)

When measuring a small quantity of liquid which instrument would permit the most accurate reading?

If available, a small, glass graduated cylinder would be best. Next best would be a test tube or any clear or semi-transparent cylinder/ small plastic recycled container/bottle. If an eyedropper is not available, recycle a milkshake straw to move/transfer small quantities of a liquid. Place the bottom end of the straw in the liquid almost to the bottom. Then hold your thumb tightly to the top end of the straw and lift out of the liquid. When you remove your thumb the contents will spill out of the bottom of the straw.

What should you look at to measure a volume of water in a graduated cylinder?

Place the cylinder on a flat surface. Read the volume contained in a graduated cylinder or volumetric flask, by comparing the bottom of the meniscus (the curved surface of the liquid),at eye level, to the nearest graduation or ring.

The least dense liquid is found at the bottom of the graduated cylinder, because the less dense it is, the farther it will go down in th graduated cylinder.

Reading the volume of liquid inside the graduated cylinder?

What is the the bottom of a curved line in a graduated cylinder?

The "bottom of a curved line" made by the liquid in a graduated cylinder could be called the "measuring line" or "reference line" in the application of that piece of labratory equipment. The curved surface of the liquid itself is called the meniscus, and we look to the bottom of the meniscus to make our reading as to the volume of the liquid in the graduated cylinder. The liquid in the cylinder "grabs" the sides of the cylinder and "pulls itself up" just a bit, and that creates the curve in the surface of the liquid. And that curve, the meniscus (which is from the Greek word for crescent), leaves us with a problem: where do we "read" the volume marked off by the graduations along the side of the cylinder? And the answer is, "At the bottom of the meniscus."

Do you measure volume to the top or bottom of the muniscus?

The meniscus is a curve in the surface of a liquid that is caused by surface tension and by the attraction between the liquid and the sides of the container. The bottom of the meniscus represents the most accurate measurement because the lines of a graduated cylinder are in the middle of the graduated cylinder.

How do you use measuring cylinder?

A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquid volume in milliliters, mL. When you place a liquid into a glass graduated cylinder, you will see that the "line" at the top of the column of liquid is actually curved downward. This is called the meniscus. When you measure the liquid volume, you record the volume in mL at the bottom of the meniscus.

Is a graduated cylinder used for?

A graduated cylinder is a usually glass (but some are plastic) quantitative piece of laboratory equipment. Graduated cylinders are used for accurate liquid measurement. To read a graduated cylinder correctly, the volume of liquid contained is measured at the bottom of the meniscus, which is at the top of the liquid, in the exact center of the cylinder, and not at the side where the liquid touches the glass (or plastic).A graduated cylinder, measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquidit is used for the precise measurements of liquids. To measure volume of liquids.Pour liquid in the graduated cylinder then find the lower meniscus (lower meniscus's lower curve of liquid's surface) read the volume off the graduations.Measurement of liquids OR a container used to find the volume of an object in Liters.
