i am not sure but i do know who discovered it...... Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1772 but did not publish it until 1777 or 1778 another person named Joseph Priestly discovered it in 1774 and published it in 1775 and takes more credit on oxygen's discovery.
Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1775.
Joseph had started experimenting with air in 1774, and he first discovered a 'new air' which he called vitriolic acid air in January 1775, which is commonly known as sulphur dioxide (SO2).
In March 1775, he discovered 'dephlogisticated air,' which was his name for oxygen (O2). He discovered it by focusing the sun's rays on some mercuric oxide. The substance he produced was oxygen, which he tested first on mice. The mice survived for a long time in the oxygen. He also tested it on himself afterwards.
Oxygen on its own, he discovered, was 5 or 6 times better than normal air that we breathe, as most of what we breathe is not useful to our lungs (e.g. nitrogen [N2 - 78%], argon [Ar - 0.93%] and carbon dioxide [CO2 - 0.03%]) goes back out again. Only the oxygen [O2 - 20.95%] is used.

Joseph Priestley and possibly Carl Wilhelm Scheele.
Before there was oxygen life tended to exist in water as a form of algae which breathed in carbon dioxide and exhaled oxygen like plants. bacteria also existed at underwater thermal vents like the ones they have discovered at the ocean floor.
Joseph Priestley is generally given credit for the discovery of oxygen, which he named dephlogisticated air'. The term was changed to 'oxygen' in 1777 by Antoine Lavoisier, who is better known for his experiments with gas.
Oxygen was discovered for the first time by a SwedishChemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in 1772.
Oxygen was discovered by the very first species on planet Earth.
Oxygen was discovered in France by Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier in 1778.
Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774.
British scientist Joseph Priestley is credited for his discovery of oxygen. He lived from 1733 to 1804.
Oxygen was first discovered by Swedish pharmacist Carl Wilhelm Scheele.

because oxygen has been around for as long as there was sea life and when the first one came out of the sea they technically discovered oxygen

Oxygen was discovered for the first time by a Swedish Chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in 1772. Joseph Priestly, an English chemist, independently, discovered oxygen in 1774 and published his findings the same year, three years before Scheele published. Antonie Lavoisier, a French chemist, also discovered oxygen in 1775, was the first to recognize it as an element, and coined its name "oxygen" - which comes from a Greek word that means "acid-former".
Nitrogen as a seperate component of air was discovered by the Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford in 1772. Oxygen was discovered by an English scientist called Joseph Priestley in 1774
