Sound travels by sound waves. Sound waves are vibrations of the gas particles which result in repeated squeezings/pullings away of the gas molecules. We usually say compressions and rarefactions. If you are in the presence of sound waves, they will enter your ears and make your eardrum move in and out very slightly.
