Which group is the control group?

When doing an experiment, it is best to have two groups a "control group" and the "test group". The test group is the group tested on while nothing is done to the control group. This provides a means of determining what, if anything, the effext of the test are.

A control group is the group that is not being manipulated by the experiment.

Often there is an effect of an expectation, so the control group is given a placebo which is similar to the experimental procedure (or drug), but doesn't manipulate the same variables.

For ethical reasons, with medical treatment in humans, the "placebo" or control group may receive what is considered the "standard care" of the time which may actually include active drugs or other treatments.

The best studies are "double blind" where the person administering the drug, or conducting the experiment is unaware of which subjects are receiving the placebo treatment. They just record the experimental parameters which are evaluated by the researcher.

Historical , observational, and cohort studies are a little more difficult as there are often many related variables and it is difficult to isolate a single variable of interest.

For example, if you are doing an observational study of the health effects of hanging out at bars, you might have to carefully control the age of the population as well as the marital status, employment, socio-economic status, exercise, nutrition, and a number of other factors.
