the oil has different particles in it that the water doesn't. therefore the oil floats on top of the water and that the oil is thicker than the water.

I believe you're looking for 'physical property'. With more explanation, the viscosity (measure of resistance of liquid) of water is low, that is: less viscous and more fluid (thin), contrast of the viscosity of oil, which is less fluid and more viscous (thick). Oil 'floats' on water because the way the molecules are structured, and what they contain (and don't contain, as stated in the above comment). Water has strong hydrogen bonds that allow its liquid state to be very fluid yet have high tension. Oil has larger clumps of molecules, but do not contain hydrogen. Though a strong bond, the molecule components and structure make the oil more buoyant as it is less dense than water.

But there was an experiment that tried to show that oil and water can mix using extreme methods (freezing, thawing, force changes, ect...).

What is distillation used to separate?

distillation is used to separate solutions of different boiling points though often complete separation of solutions can't be achieve due to azotrops example - when separating water and ethanol the fluid with the highest boiling point is ~97% ethanol ~3% water due entropic considerations

What physical and chemical properties are used to separate metals from their ores?

Some impurities ,or unwanted substances ,are less dense than water ,so they float in water and can be washed away.Others ,like sulfur ,can be burned away.

What is Evaporating Dish used for?

They are used to evaporate liquids. Specifically, the goal is to separate the fluid from any dissolved solids therein. Lets say you want to get salt out of water- you can't drain them by hand, so you evaporate the water, which leaves the salt there.

What does a chemical property give a substance the ability to do?

A chemical property is the properties exhibited by a material in a chemical reaction. This gives a substance the ability to have a chemical identity and is also used in building chemical classifications. The properties can be used in identifying a substance that is unknown or to separate substances. The property also helps in providing information on the application of a substance.

How do you separate the colours in biro ink?

Chromatography cannot be used because biro ink does not dissolve in water. I actually dont know how to separate the colors in Biro ink.. :( sorry, but look it up on google.com!

What physical property can you used to separate the sugar from the mixture?

You can use the property of solubility in water to separate sugar from a mixture. Since sugar is soluble in water, you can dissolve the mixture in water and then use filtration or evaporation to separate the sugar from the other components.

What is used to separate sugar and water?

evaporation is used to separate sugar and water.

Which physical property could be used to separate balsa wood from rocks?

you can put the mixture in water, the wood will float and the rocks will sink.

What property can be used to separate parts of a solution?

One property that can be used to separate parts of a solution is the difference in boiling points of the components. This allows for techniques such as distillation to separate the components based on their boiling points.

What property of the ink was used to separate the colours?

The process is called chromatography. The property is the attraction of pigments to a liquid or solution (such as water) and its ability to dissolve in the solution. In paper chromatography, a pigment that dissolves easily in water will travel farther up the paper as opposed to an oil, that does not dissolve in water.

What physical property is used to separate crude oil into fractions?

Difference in the boiling points among different byproducts of crude oil is used to separate out each component from a mixture. Fractional distillation is used to carry out this process. This method can also be used to purify water and acetone from a mixture.

What can be used to separate salt water?

Is income from separate property considered community property?

No...at least not initially. The following are the most common forms of separate property: * inheritances and gifts * heirlooms * chattels used wholly or principally for a business * property acquired under a trust * property that the partners declare is separate under an agreement * property acquired before the relationship began * property acquired with the proceeds of separate property and not intended for the use or benefit of both partners However if you take this income and place it in a joint bank account, it will likely change to community property. Also, if you use this money on your spouse's separate property, courts typically would see this as a gift and also lose its character.

Which property of paraffin is used to separate them from crude oil?

The property of paraffin's high melting point is used to separate them from crude oil in a process called fractional distillation. Paraffin's high boiling point causes it to condense and separate from the other components of crude oil at different temperatures in the distillation column.

If a private water company is using your property and water for their business can the owner of the property recover money for property taxes and the water used?

Of course tell them to rent half of your property if not sue them....its your property you have earned it...Kick them off
