Taste buds were not invented, they evolved. Nearly all animals have taste buds, taste buds can detect whether an item is sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Japanese researchers have suggested that there is a fifth taste, which they call umami, which is defined as savory.

What is the four types of papillae?

The four types of papillae on the tongue are filiform, fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate. Filiform papillae are the most numerous and provide texture but do not contain taste buds. Fungiform papillae are mushroom-shaped and contain taste buds, primarily located on the tip and sides of the tongue. Circumvallate papillae are larger and arranged in a V-shape at the back of the tongue, also containing taste buds, while foliate papillae are found on the sides and contain taste buds as well, but are less prominent in humans.

What is a good question for tast buds in a science fair project?

Where are the taste buds for the various types of tastes located? (Salt, sweet, bitter, umami, metal)

What tastes does the tongue detect?

There are different taste buds in our tongue. There is sweet at the front, salty at the middle, and bitter and sour all way further to the end of your tongue. So when we eat certain types of food, such as cucumber, which is sweet in our tongue, our other taste buds do not function yet but our sweet taste bud does.

Why does a spoonful of sugar instanly taste sweeter than the same amount of sugar in a cube?

Don't forget, that's an opinion. Personally, I think sugar cubes taste better than spoonfuls, but, of course, it's just an opinion. If I were to explain why you had you opinion, I think it's probably because your taste buds are more all-around, versus in sections. You see, tongues either have different spots where taste buds find sour, salty, sweet, etc. flavors most enjoyable, whereas other people's tongues find something tastes relatively good no matter which taste buds are being used. You must have the latter, and the spoonful of sugar is more spread out with flavor, while the cube has a more direct spot, so the spreading out-ness of the spoon makes it more enjoyable to your tongue.
