The Greek word átomos (ἄτομος) was first used by the philosopher Democritus who lived around 450 BCE. The modern use of the word goes back to the beginnings of the science of chemistry in the mid 17th cent. It's first usage (as meaning a very small particle) outside of scientific journals and into the mainstream goes back at least as early as 1796 when the word is found in newspapers of the time. (....and was crufshed to atoms before the eyes of its unhappy mother...)
In 460 B.C. a Greek philosopher, Democritus, developed the idea of atoms. He asked this question: If you break a piece of matter in half, and then break it in half again, how many breaks will you have to make before you can break it no further? Democritus thought that it ended at some point, a smallest possible bit of matter. He called these basic matter particles, atoms, from Greek for "not breakable": a-tomos. (For the meaning of the two word parts, compare English words like "asymmetrical" and "tome".) In India, a person named Kanaada/Kanada (known as the author of Vaisheshika Darshan) had the same idea, but obviously, he used a different word for the parts: "paramaanu" in Sanskrit, meaning "the ultimate particle". It's not clear when he lived exactly; estimates vary between 6th - 2nd Century BCE
atom as we all know is a basic unit of matter that consists of dense central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons. The atomic nucleus contains a mix of positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons. the word atom is not a commonly heard word reasons being is that it is the smallest recognised division of a chemical element hoping this helped!
its not, its closer to about 1/1800 of a hydrogen atom, the English chemist john Dalton was the first person to discover relative atomic masses and use them properly.
You should know this...Protons. Next time, just think about the question! (:
Its RADIOACTIVITY!! That was the first discovery that rejects the idea that the atom is indestructible
Dalton didn't discover the atom. Democritus did. Dalton, however was the first to use the word atom. which comes from the GGreek word atomos, meaning "cannot be split"
One atom is too small to see. A helium atom is the smallest type of atom.
Compounds are comprised from [and composed of] Atoms.
The ancient Greek philosopher Democritus is credited with being the first person to use the term "atom" to describe the fundamental particles of matter. Democritus proposed that all matter is composed of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms.
Atom is the word used to describe a single unit of an element by all professional scientists. That is the only word you should use.
A homonym for the word "atom" is "Adam." These words sound the same but have different meanings.
None. There are no types of atom bombs in "The word"
First, I answer a question.
Scientists have split the atom.
This is the first time. Never use it again. There is no such word, nor should there be any such word. Use doctor.
άτομο (atomo, atom)
A proton is a single positive charge in the nucleus of an atom. The number of protons determine what the atom is. Hydrogen has one proton, compared to eight for oxygen.
