Kolliker was a German biologist who demonstrated that sperms and eggs are cellular products of organisms from which a new organism is derived by cell devision. He placed histology on a cellular basis and applied it to embryology.

His researches and texts on histology and embryology and his reconition of schwann's cell theory were pioneer contributions toward understanding the function of spermatozoa and of spontaneous variation in evolution.
