Why are there so many different types of leaves?

answ2. Leaves have many challenges to meet, but primarily, the function of providing sugars for the plant.

Some plants have to resist or repel browsing, some to deal with low light levels, some to live in an aquatic environment, or large seasonal changes, and so on. Each challenge or combination of challenges, brings forth a solution that meets the need.

In New Zealand we have some plants that start off in life with a 1 cm wide leaf, up to 1m long. On adulthood, or about 5m height, this plant changes to having a 5cm wide leaf, but only 150mm long. So leaf shape is not fixed even with a single plant.

Because there are many different climates and environments in the world. The plant will adapt to its environment and the leaf shape determines the amount of sunlight the chlorophyll take in for photosynthesis.
