The point on the earth's surface at which the sun is directly overhead is continuously moving west at a rate of one degree of longitude every four minutes, thereby taking 24 hours to make the full 360° trek each day. Traditionally, 12:00, or noon, was by definition the middle of the average day in every community around the world, so the clocks of each city showed a slightly different time. In order to make things much simpler, especially in the industries of transportation, commerce and communication, entire zones of about 15° of longitude (1/24 of the way around the earth) would all set their clocks to the same time, which ideally is within a half hour of true local time and which is normally offset from the time at the zero meridian (UTC), which goes through Greenwich, England, by an exact multiple of an hour. If the system were perfect, we would have no more than 25 time zones around the world (counting the 12-hour offset on each side of the international date line), but with several time zones whose UTC offset is an odd multiple of a half hour, and at least two time zones whose offset is an odd multiple of a quarter-hour, there are about 40 different time zones in the world today.
