Styrofoam is an insulator, meaning it is hard for heat to travel through it. This means if you put cold water in it, it is harder fo heat from the outside to warm it up. Conversely, hot water will also stay hot.

∙ 11y agoI assume you mean polystyrene. At any rate, "foam" contains air bubbles within the solid plastic or medium. Air is an insulating material (bit of a generalisation, but don't know to what level you want to the information). This stops thermal convection occurring, and prevents heat entering the container, in much the same way as a vacuum flask or Thermos keeps a drink hot.
This should really be under physics or chemistry btw.
FYI I have an A level in Chemistry and Physics. Also studying Biology at degree level.
