The simplest, but by no means the complete answer is that the Earth is "tilted" in relation to the rays of the sun. In Summer, the Northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, and receives more solar energy than it does in the Winter, when it is tilted away from the sun.
Sorry, this is really a follow up question. Why does it continue to get hotter in summer when the longest day is at the begining (June 21st N. Hemisphere). You would think June 21st would be the hottest day as the days are getting shorter after that.
