Why does weight melt ice?

The melting of ice represents a change of state (solid to liquid). When ice melts, nothing "disappears" from where it melted. The mass of the water is the same as that of the ice. Think of it in terms of molecules of water - the number stays the same and the mass will be the same. So, with the same force pulling those molecules down (gravity), there is no reason for mass to change as everything is still there.

It's like weighing an apple, smashing it up, and weighing it again. It'll stay (roughly) the same. Thankyou for the answer on my homework

The weight does not melt the ice, it's the heat from inside the weight that melts the ice. Ice is 0 degrees farenheit, anything that touches it has a higher temperature. Water has a higher temperature, and the weight has a temperature of the room it is in.

When a blade of ice skates melts the ice beneath it what does it reduce?

It reduces drag. *Drag meaning friction between the blade and the ice. That said, it takes an extreme amount of force to melt ice by means of applying pressure. Consider a glacier-- if ice melted under a small amount of pressure, a large glacier would start to melt under its own weight! We can then realize that figure skaters do not melt the ice under the blade my means of pressure. Basically, yes friction/drag WOULD be reduced if the ice beneath the blade melted, but the ice simply won't melt due to the weight of the skater alone.

Which ice cube will melt fastest in the shade or in the sun?

Does ice melt faster in sun or shade

What temperature does ice melt fastest?

Cold water will not melt the ice cube in record time, but hot water will, but salt water will also melt it fast, but if you add both together the ice cube will melt alot fast. Deceasing time alot.

What would melt faster an red ice cube or an clear ice cube?

coloring doesnt matter. an ice is an ice cube. now, if that coloring is due to chemicals mixed into the water, then there'll be a difference in how fast it'll melt, but otherwise, they will melt at the same time.

Does a sphere shaped ice cube melt faster than a regular shaped ice cube?

A cylinder shaped ice cube will melt faster because it has a greater surface area than the rectangle-shaped ice cube has. Cubes of ice with less surface area will melt slower. Ice that has very low surface area has more ice concealed inside than it does on the outside. Therefore, ice cubes that have more surface area will melt faster... I hope this will help you.. :) ..
