Why is this question found under technology? Oh well, I'm game for anything so I'll give it a shot.

I once saw a very old Rod Sterling show, it could have been "Twilight Zone", where a guy was sitting in a beautiful field having a picnic with his family. While enjoying himself, his vision suddenly gets distorted...then goes black. A few second later he sees a cone slowly open over his head and there are aliens there, resetting the "life" playback machine that has malfunctioned. The cone closes and he's back in his reality (sounds like "Matrix" ripped off Rod to me).

Excluding the above possibility, if you don't know yourself you are destined to not only justify mistakes you've made, but repeat them too. A third party (i.e. "counselor") is an excellent example of someone who can objectively look at what you perceive as "oneself", and educate you on where you have mistakenly justified actions or made decisions that were never in fact in your own best interest.

Until someone else opens the cone, you are destined to only know the "self" you wish to see.
