Why is it important to use a standard system of measurement?

It is important to use common, in the sense that we all have the same, referents to the same units of measurment. Because:

We trade, we build, we exchange, we invent, we question, we communicate, but we only get along when we are talking about the same things.

Communication about different positions, or notions about anything we are going to have use in common, or seperately after common use and later, or be subjected to the consequences of someone elses' use is critical so that Mankind does not more or less wound itself, stop trade with each other, or blowup the common grounds, over something that it did not know it was talking about in the first place.

To even get an idea of what's going on, you just got to use the same kind of mesurments, and on the lowest level, daily lives, common units of measurement.

For example, if you want to buy something, that is exchange money, (a symbol you both agree is something that you each will exchange for something else, then you have to decide that how much, what, and how you are going to agree to the exchange: 10 gallons, 12 yards or 2000 pounds of something with units of measurement that both agree to.

You both have to use the same units of measurment to get to the point of the exchange. Or there is no exchange or the parties go back to the first paragraph and more or less batter each other, stop trade, and blow up the common grounds.

Next, anything we do with someone else that requires us to come back to the problem, that is, for example, build a bridge over a river, when different people are going to be weaving the wire, figure out where the farm was after the annual flood * requires us to have the same perspective, viewpoint, enough to get the other person to see the same thing we saw. In the final analysis that means we have the same set of measurements.

The units have to be the same, or it just cannot get done, or if it gets done we do not have any way to know what has been done.

That's why it is important to use common units of measurement.

*No longer done in Egypt with the last plug in the Aswan Dam which stopped the floods, but for sure also altered the distrubution of silt. Prior to that the Nile flooded and did away with land marks, annually. Mensuration, beginning of engeneering (or maybe a part of it) grew because Man really needed to find something and be able to agree that it was there, came into existence. Units of measurement and agreement about the methods of measurements keep a lot of people from battering upon each other.

It is important to have a standard system of measurement, so that everybody can communicate and be using the same measure. An example would be: a horse's height is specified in hands. I guess when this practice started, it was convenient for a person to use his hand to measure something. But somebody else would have a wider or narrower hand, so now the hand is standardized at 4 inches.

VERY important. When we mix things together to make things we must measure the ingredients accurately.

Custard, or Cake, or Bread, or Solder, or Adhesives, or Concrete, and especially Steel Alloys, are ALL mixtures which only give us what we want if we WEIGH the ingredients very accurately. The whole world uses a very, very, accurate COPY of a STANDARD length (a Metre) and a Standard Weight (A Kilogram) This ensures that whoever or wherever we are, the measuring is exact and the result will always be the same.

Equally important is that it ensures that we are not cheated when we buy things . The scales used in shops and factories are checked by Inspectors from the Weights & Measures Government Department. Heavy penalties apply if they are cheating.
