Risk Assessment is part of Risk Management, a formalized process for ensuring that organizations do not expose people to unacceptable risk.

Identifying a risk is not much use unless its magnitude is assessed and that is not much use unless you decide whether it matters and how likely it is and what you can and should and will do about it to mitigate it.

Unfortunately there is a natural reluctance to apply formal procedures in some places as they are perceived to be costly in time and effort. But this is very short-term thinking. A risk that is not managed properly will bring regret sooner rather than later, and it can never be managed if it's not assessedfirst.

What is generic risk assessment?

Generic risk assessment is a systematic process used to identify, evaluate, and manage risks that are common across similar activities or environments. It involves analyzing potential hazards and their impacts, as well as implementing control measures to mitigate these risks. This type of assessment provides a baseline that can be adapted for specific situations, ensuring a consistent approach to safety and risk management. It is often employed in industries like construction, healthcare, and manufacturing to streamline safety protocols.

What is an overall risk level?

Overall risk level refers to the assessment of potential hazards and uncertainties associated with a particular situation, project, or investment. It is determined by evaluating factors such as likelihood of occurrence, potential impact, and the effectiveness of existing controls or mitigation strategies. This assessment helps organizations make informed decisions by balancing potential rewards against the associated risks. Ultimately, a higher overall risk level indicates greater potential for negative outcomes.

What is the difference between general and specific risk assessement and when might specific risk assessement need to e drawn up?

General risk assessment identifies and evaluates potential hazards across an entire organization or project, providing a broad overview of risks. In contrast, specific risk assessment focuses on particular activities, processes, or situations that may involve unique or heightened risks, often requiring detailed analysis. Specific risk assessments may need to be drawn up when introducing new equipment, undergoing significant changes in operations, or addressing particular regulatory requirements that necessitate a deeper examination of risks.
