∙ 14y agoTurning on the gas first , creates an oxygen-gas rich envelope in a small area, which when the match is lit will cause a fire-ball type explosion, and if a body part is in , or near the envelope when it ignites, could result in serious injury.

Some people do it this way, whilst others prefer to turn on the gas first. I find it easier to have both hands available to get a match out and light it so always turn on the gas before I get a match out.

Some people prefer to do it this way so that there is no delay in lighting the gas whilst a match is struck. On some of the old gas fires it would take a while for the gas to reach the grill by which time the match could go out so many preferred to turn on the gas first, freeing up both hands to quickly get a match out and strike it whilst the gas was running. If the match went out or broke it would probably be wise to turn the gas off and start again although some people wouldn’t bother, just getting another match out.
