Charles Darwin was famous due to his research aboard the Beagle, and his 1859 book On the Origin of Species.

Incidentally, Darwin is often erroneously credited with developing the Theory of Evolution, yet the word evolution only appears once in his writing, on the last page of On the Origin of Species. Darwin laid the groundwork, but that's about all of it.
