Best Answer

Yes. Horses hooves continue to grow throughout their lives. Most grow about 1/4 inch every 4 to 8 weeks, (more or less) depending on the seasons, weather and the horses environment. Likewise, a horses hooves should be trimmed every 4 to 8 weeks by a reputable farrier. A link below points to a good site on Natural Hoof Care.

Horses hooves are made primarily of keratin, the same thing that human nails and hair are made of. As with our hair and nails, horses hooves continue to grow throughout it's life (in horses, about 1cm per month).

As horses run on hard ground, if their hooves did not regenerate they would soon wear down and so the horse would be rendered lame at a very early age. By continuous growth, the hooves can sustain a lifetime of wear and tear.

Hope this helps!

The horse hoof is akin to the human fingernail. It grows at the end of the foot to protect the waling surface from damage.
