The tornadoes most common in the southeast quadrant of the US are often referred to as "Dixie Alley" tornadoes. These tornadoes typically occur during the late fall through early spring and can be particularly dangerous due to the densely populated areas they affect.

Tornadoes hit on all surfaces. Many go unnoticed because they do not hit areas where people live. In the United States we have Tornado Alley...which pretty much runs straight up through the middle of the country. Much of this central region is flat, however there are elevations and these do get hit. The tornadoes that hit in the early part of May in 1999 seemed to multiply as they destroyed much of the State of Oklahoma.Oklahoma City that had a tornado that a mile in width and stayed on the ground for over an hour destroying everything in its path. Other major cities hit by tornadoes include Birmingham, Alabama; St. Louis, Missouri; and Fort Worth, Texas.

Tornadoes typically hit the ground, causing damage to structures and landscapes in their path. By definition, a tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground.

No terrain is safe. It is a common misconception that tornadoes cannot hit hilly or mountainous terrain. They can and do. Although mountains may inhibit the initial development of a storm, once a tornado is estalblished hills do not affect it. In fact they can make an approaching tornado harder to see.
