At one time the owners of small farms were known as crofters, they lived in crofts.

Farmers are called farmers here. There used to be different kinds of farms. Some crofts, often in the Highlands and the west of the country. In other parts people grouped together in small country villages called ferm toons or farm towns and shared the land.
