Well, on an island, you have the natural barriers of water for protection. The water can also provide a source of food and transportation. If the island is tropical you could grow some exotic fruits and vegetables.

On the negative side, you're rather isolated, and may have a smaller amount of land, depending on the size of the island. Also, inclement weather could have a disastrous effect.
