I believe it was the Bridger Bowl Ski Resort in the Bridger Mountains, which recorded 72 inches in 24 hours. I skied it, and we were told that it was a record. I found this "site", if you can call it that http://www.avalanche.org/~issw2004/issw_previous/2004/proceedings/pdffiles/papers/046.pdf It isn't much, but it does concur. Note: the record was a world record, not a U.S. record. The exact number of 72 inches I only know because I was there. On our first ride up the lift, at the top, a ski-patrol, who had just received notice of the measurement, shouted to the people riding up the lift that it was 72 inches. 6 feet exactly.
The highest recorded amount of snowfall in a 24-hour period in the US occurred in 1921 in the town of Silver Lake, Colorado. 76 inches fell on April 14 and 15. A total of 87 inches fell during that storm, which only lasted about 28 hours. The US record for the highest amount of snowfall in one storm is held by the Mount Shasta Ski Bowl, at 15.75 feet (480 cm), over the course of four days in February 1959.

The deepest snowfall recorded in the US was at Tamarack, California with a depth of 451 inches. I do not believe there is any place in California that has never received snow. I have even been in Death Valley when it snowed. The average snowfall over Donner Summit is about 35 feet. So California has no "average snowfall." It depends on where in California one is when asking about the average snowfall.
