A large area of flat or gently rolling land is a plain. Humans usually use them for farming and building cities, unles the plain is a desert or in the Arctic. In nature, forests, grasslands, and deserts can be dust in plains, depending on the amount of rainfall.
The flat land on the side of a mountain is called a plateau or a bench. It is a relatively flat area that provides a break in the steep slope of the mountain.
They both mean the same thing, a flat, basically treeless area.
A large area of treeless grassland can be a plain, savanna or prairie.

A tundra. Its has permafrost and plants don't decompose because of it. It is a really harsh region. <><><> It may also be a prairie. The grasslands of Wyoming have almost NO trees.
plateau
Geographically, a "plain" is a large, treeless area of level or nearly level land. By convention the term "plain" is usually used to describe a low level flat area such as a coastal plain, sea floor plain, a river plain or a lunar plain (mare) rather than an elevated flat area which would be called a plateau.
The Nullarbor Plain is in Australia. It is a large, flat, treeless desert in the south of the continent, which parallels the Great Australia Bight.
