Small monkeys, such as capucchin and rhesus monkeys and marmosets, are legal to keep without a special license in the UK as they are not classed as dangerous animals. However, they will need to be vaccinated against any diseases they may be carrying before they can be imported to the UK.

Larger monkeys and apes, such as chimpanzees, oran-utangs and gorillas, cannot be kept as domestic pets because they can be dangerous. Male chimps in particular can be very unpredictable, and are extremely strong, able to inflict terrible injuries or even death upon a person. Special licenses are required to be allowed to keep these, and they have to be confined to private menageries without being allowed out into the outside world.

In Scotland, it is illegal to have monkeys as pets without a special license, as they are classified as dangerous wild animals. The license is typically only issued to zoos, wildlife parks, and other professional establishments that can provide appropriate care for the animals.
