The Chumash are a Native American people who historically inhabited the central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south.
They also occupied three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was uninhabited. Modern place names with Chumash origins include Malibu, Lompoc, Ojai, Pismo Beach, Point Mugu, Piru, Lake Castaic, Saticoy, and Simi Valley.
According to Census 2000, four out of ten American Indians lived in the Western region of the United States.
Today, most people who identify as Aztec descendants live in Mexico, particularly in the central part of the country where the Aztec Empire was located.
The Hupa Indians lived in northwestern California along the Trinity River and its tributaries. They are part of the larger group of Indigenous peoples known as the California Indians. Today, many Hupa people reside on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation.
