The Blue Mountains were not originally given that name. Captain Arthur Phillip called the northern section of the Blue Mountains Carmarthen Hills and the southern section Lansdowne Hills. In the early years of the settlement of Sydney, convicts and locals were not interested in Phillip's "fancy" names, and instead referred to the mountains as the Blue Mountains, a name which gradually gained in popularity.
