Why can't some areas be used for crops?

It's all to do with the soil. If the soil is too sandy, rocky, clayey, acidic, alkaline, saline, or shallow, then it's not good for crops. Topography also plays a big role: steep, rolling hills or mountain sides are not good for driving the tractor on! Many areas are also protected by private landowners, state/provincial law, or federal law so that they maintain their natural existence without having to be subject to the plow. Many areas that are not protected, in the author of this answer's opinion, and are turned into crops, should be reverted back to grassland or natural habitat to improve and maintain the integrity of the land.

Is grassland is in danger today?

Yes, grasslands all over the world are in danger. They are in danger of being completely destroyed due to human development. Building of more houses, shopping malls and industries threatens biodiversity. Farming also dangers the natural grassland, because of overgrazing by farm animals. Grasslands are being used so much because they are usually flat, dry areas with soil full of nutrients; therefore creating the perfect place to breed livestock. Mining of coal and minerals also destroys grassland. We can save grassland area by leaving it in its natural state and this will also promote biodiversity such as birds, insects and small animals.
