Geographical features have names so that we can refer to them precisely. Without names, instead of saying "Mt Etna is in Sicily, an island in the Mediterranean", we'd have to say "That big pile of smoking rock, you know, it's like a mile high and stuff, and it's in that place there, uh, well it is some land in the middle of all that water between a lot of land and some other land, you know what I mean?"
