Fermanagh had a population of over 156,000 in 1841. But after the Famine and continued emigration from the county, the population declined to an all time low of 49,000 in 1966. It has since increased to over 55,000 but still remains a very rural county with few job opportunities.
Most of the population live in the east, in and around Dublin and other major towns on or near the east coast. That part of Ireland is not sparsely populated. Much of Ireland is rural, so not as many people live there. The quality of land in some parts is good, but in other parts, particularly the west of Ireland it is not so good.
