Fermanagh had a population of over 156,000 in 1841. But after the Famine and continued emigration from the county, the population declined to an all time low of 49,000 in 1966. It has since increased to over 55,000 but still remains a very rural county with few job opportunities.

Most of the population live in the east, in and around Dublin and other major towns on or near the east coast. That part of Ireland is not sparsely populated. Much of Ireland is rural, so not as many people live there. The quality of land in some parts is good, but in other parts, particularly the west of Ireland it is not so good. As a result, not as many people live in the west of Ireland.

Why is Mauritania so sparsely populated?

Mauritania has a low population density due to its large desert areas that are not suitable for human habitation. Harsh climatic conditions, limited access to water sources, and sparse vegetation make it difficult for people to live in many parts of the country. Population distribution is also influenced by historical nomadic lifestyles and economic activities that are concentrated in certain regions.

What is sparssely populated means?

Sparsely means only occassionally or thinly. So, sparsely settled means people occupy the space, but spread out. Example: The sparsely settled colony of 5000 square acres only had 40 residents, with most of them living in town and some living on the outskirts.
