We they are so important b cuz if she didn't have those bad things happend 2 her then her life would have never changed and she would have been a same old snobby brat and I just read this book in reading group and it was great but at first everyone hated Esperanza b cuz we thought she seamed so bratty but now our feelings changed and we like Esperanza and everything changed and Esperanza had 2 grow up anyways she was already 13 years old and she didn't have 2 do anything and that's not good cuz what about when she's an older adult and she has 2 take her own bath ya know like hortensia won't be there to bath her or no one will cook and clean and work for her and take care of things for her and if she didn't have those bad things happend to her she would still be the same and she would have never learned to cook clean wash babysit bath and things like that, that show responsibility and so If she wouldn't have learned those thing when she is An adult she probley wouldn't even know what to do.. But atleast that's how I would Answer this question.. That is why the mountains and valleys are important in Esperanza rising
