independent clause
A group of related words containing a subject and verb is a sentence.
A group of words that contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence is called an independent clause. Independent clauses express a complete thought and can function on their own. For example, "She enjoys reading." is an independent clause.
A group of words that contain a subject and a verb is called a clause. A clause can either be independent (a complete sentence) or dependent (incomplete, needing more information to form a sentence).
A clause is a group of related words containing a subject that tells the reader what the sentence is about, and the verb tells the reader what the subject is doing. A clause comes in four types, independent, dependent, relative or noun clause
A phrase is a group of words that functions as a single unit within a sentence, while a clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate. Clauses can stand alone as complete sentences (independent clauses) or be dependent on another clause to form a complete sentence. Phrases can be part of a clause.
An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence; a dependent one cannot. An independent clause (or main clause, matrix clause) is a clause that can stand by itself, also known as a simple sentence. Independent clauses contain a subject and a predicate. Multiple independent clauses can be joined by using a semicolon or a comma plus a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). The dog is running down the street = independent clause Because its master called it = dependent clause
An independent clause usually starts (or ends) with a conjunction. An independent clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that is a complete thought which is part of a sentence but could stand on its own as a complete sentence.Example: It was the first time that my parents came for a visit. (the conjunction 'that' is joining the two independent clauses)A pronoun DOES start a DEPENDENT clause.A dependent clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb but is not a complete thought.A relative pronoun introduces a relative clause (a dependent clause that starts with a relative pronoun) gives information about its antecedent. The relative pronouns are: who, whom, whose, which, that.Example: The shoes that I bought will match the new suit. (the relative pronoun 'that' introduces the relative clause 'that I bought')
A group of words w/ a subject and a predicate is SENTENCE.Predicate is the one who describe the subject.Subject is the one who is talking about in the sentence.Ex:Leslly draw like a professional. The subject is Leslly and the predicate is proffesional.
A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and a dependent clause joined together. An independent clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and is a complete thought. An independent clause can stand on its own as a sentence.A dependent clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb but is not a complete thought and can't stand on its own as a sentence.Example complex sentences (dependent clause in bold):These are the flowers that mother likes. If you can, pick up some milk on your way.Cell phone reception is unreliable where John lives. The teacher who assigned the work should answer your question.
An independent clause without a subordinate clause is NOT a sentence fragment. It is an independent clause, therefore it can stand "independently," or alone. However, if you decide to use a subordinating clause, you will need to add a dependent clause because subordinating conjunctions (because, after, although, et al) are used to create a complex sentences(an independent + dependent clause).
Grammatically, a clause is a group of words in a sentence containing a subject and a predicate of its own to give a full sense to the whole sentence ; for example," I have given my wife a bracelet which is made of platinum. ". In this sentence, the word ' which ' is the subject of the clause whereas ' is made of platinum ' is the predicate of the clause.
