I've read on other sites that you can write "No longer at this address" on the letter and it will be returned to the post office and usually, if the previous tenant left the post office a forwarding address, they will forward it on, otherwise it will be sent back to the sender.

Yes they do. Open Office will read a multitude of files created on different software programs, including Microsoft Office.

Usually there is no need to convert, since Open Office can read excel files (except Open Office probably will have problems with macros). If you have Excel 2007, then save the file in Office 2003 compatibility mode.
Open Office will happily read Word perfect documents.
Open Office files are saved as 'open document format' - Most of the popular office suites can read open document formats. If your friends computer can't read .odt format documents, ask them what program they use, then save your document as (for example) .doc
