I was wondering this same thing and just looked up element(s) and these two made the most sense with elements of population:
1.one of the fundamental or irreducible components making up a whole
2.a component or constituent of a whole or one of the parts into which a whole may be resolved by analysis ex: Bricks and mortar are elements of every masonry wall.
