I don't know what your situation is but perhaps you could simply ask to see their papers? Or I think Immigration and naturalization papers are filed at state of county level. You could check into this.

Finally, you could check with the INS if you are suspicious. Be forewarned, however, that by doing so you could cause them a lot of legal trouble - like deportation for example...

Check at the INS office near you but if you are waiting outside a Home Depot for someone to pick you up to build a deck you might be illegal.
