The minimum requirement for a sentence is a noun and a verb... something that is the subject of the sentence, and something that is happening. So, you could write "John sits." ... that is a sentence. You can add other information, like where is John sitting, or why. John sits on the chair, or John sits in the living room. You could add additional information about what color the chair is, or how John is sitting... all those details make more complex sentences. These are both sentences: The fish swims. The brightly-colored fish swims quickly to get away from the shark. In general, though, you make a sentence by adding a verb to a subject. Hope that helps.

Rain falls. (rain is the subject and falls is the verb)

Rain falls on the sidewalk. (sidewalk is the object)

Rain falls on the sidewalk and the lawn. (sidewalk and lawn are both objects)

Rain falls on the sidewalk and the lawn in the summer.

Rain falls on the sidewalk and the lawn in the summer but in the winter it snows.

You can make a simple sentence like the first or a complex sentence, but a sentence must have a subject and a verb to be a sentence.
