A minor character is one who does not take part in most of the important action of the book, but who is still important enough to be worth including. Some examples of a minor character would be the detective's secretary, the butler or maid in the rich man's house, or the barista who serves the hero coffee every morning. Here are some sentences.

  • Mary is a minor character in my story, but she makes an important observation that helps the hero out.
  • I've decided that the grocer is actually a minor character instead of a major one.
  • Minor characters should not take over the story.
